The National Portrait Gallery of Australia is the place where the Australian story unfolds through the art of portraiture – where successive generations can learn of the remarkable, questionable and heroic dimensions of our heritage. The Gallery presents a broad and variegated picture of Australian life, national distinction and attainment. Each portrait is the result of an encounter between the sitter and the artist, a meeting that often reveals a great deal about both.

We aspire to engage our participants with the possibilities of portraiture. Visual Thinking Strategies is an integral part of our approach to this task and is a fundamental aspect of our practice as educators. It is also a powerful aspect of our team building and the way we acquaint ourselves with new works and exhibitions.

Our suite of Portrait School programs is designed to be dynamic and participatory – both on site and on line. Programs encourage critical thinking and collaboration through close engagement with the Gallery’s portraits. Every program is led by a passionate, professional Learning Facilitator. Students explore portraits through visual analysis, discussion, drawing and specially designed activities that cater for different learning preferences.

The Access and Learning team also manage all visitor services at the Gallery and curate a series of workshops, performances, family festivals, activity spaces, ‘in conversation’ events and talks for the public.
