VTS / Image Selection Workshop – Online (May 2025)

The VTS experience begins when we take our collective quiet moment to look and the facilitator asks the question, What is going on in this picture?…But what happens before that moment? Designing a VTS experience that is truly audience-centered takes time and careful consideration. When we choose an image that is “just right” for our group, we feel the vibes almost immediately. Rich and meaningful conversations happen when viewers are able to connect with a thoughtfully chosen work of art, and connect with one another.

In this workshop, participants will become designers of rich VTS discussions by learning the theory, research, tools and criteria behind successful image selection. Presenters will share how our design process has worked over time and what we have learned, using examples of some big hits and some big misses. By discussing and practicing the principles of image selection, sequencing, and evaluation, participants will walk away with strategies for choosing images with their unique audiences and collections in mind.

This workshop is designed for practitioners who have completed a VTS Practicum or the equivalent, and have facilitated at least 10 VTS discussions. We will be asking you to draw on your facilitator experience.

This workshop meets 4 times online for 2-hours each session.

Workshop Expectations:

• This is an online workshop and uses the digital platforms Zoom and Google Docs.
• Information for accessing the course materials will be emailed to participants before the start of the course. Participants must be able to attend all meetings to complete this workshop. In addition to class meetings, participants should plan to complete brief assignments/reflections between each class.
• Closed Captioning available.
• This workshop will be conducted in English.
• This course is scheduled in Pacific time zone. Please check your personal time zone alignment before registering.
